Kids Afloat!
Last week students from Maclean Public School saw all of their planning, prototyping and building turn into action, on the water. It all started when student David Torrens said, “ It would be cool if we could build a raft in the Makerspace!’ We were super excited and started working on our ideas. We began by researching rafts and floatation and then drew up some plans. From there we made small scale models of a variety of rafts and tested their floatation and stability.
After we decided on which model we would build, we researched materials to find light and buoyant products. We also had to think about how much weight the raft had to support. This maths was fun. Ms Phillips and Mr Woods helped us get the materials and taught us how to use the tools we needed to build with. We had lots of fun working together turning David’s idea into a real raft.
We all went to Yamba and tested our raft out. It was so much fun and the best thing was that it FLOATED!
